Eighteen

By two in the morning, Marsh threw in the towel. Too little sleep the however many nights before, plus settling the family back in at the house, plus settling himself back in at the office, plus another few hours reviewing surveillance footage once he’d returned home, and Marsh was done. He’d be no good to Levi or anyone in the morning without some real rest. He closed his laptop, tossed his glasses on top of it, and grabbed his phone off the charger. Standing, his bones and muscles protested, joints cracking all over. Then cracking some more when he jolted suddenly at the phone vibrating in his hand.

He glanced at the screen, and his pulse rocketed into his throat. The home security app reported motion at the curb. A half second later, a car door shut outside, muffled as if someone was trying to be quiet. Activity at this late hour was unusual for the neighborhood; this could not be good. Marsh tapped the banner notification to open the app, then set the phone on the nearby file cabinet so he could open the gun safe in the office closet.

The phone vibrated again. Fuck. Motion detected closer to the house. The new video loaded over the first one, and Marsh stopped midspin of the bolted safe door, not believing what his eyes were telling him. Connor, the Madigan guard who’d been assigned to Levi’s family at Aunt Liz’s and was now on the house, was halfway down the front walk, shaking hands with Levi. Marsh’s pulse kicked up again, adrenaline of a different sort pumping through his veins.

He hustled out of the office, deactivated the house alarm, and barely caught himself from thundering down the stairs. He took them at a quieter pace, clearing the bottom step just as Levi opened the front door.

Questions fired inside Marsh’s head. What was he doing there? Where was Catherine? What did this mean for the op? But as Levi dropped his bag and closed the door, as he turned and locked his tired eyes with Marsh’s, none of Marsh’s questions mattered anymore. All that mattered was Levi under the same roof as him. Under their roof. Home. And Marsh sure as fuck wasn’t staying on his side of the room this time.

He closed the distance between them and claimed his husband’s mouth. Despite the late hour and what had to be as little if not less sleep than Marsh, Levi caught right on, twining his arms around Marsh’s neck and diving into the kiss with him. Marsh shuffled him back against the door and deepened the kiss, tongues tangling, bodies pressed together. As they reacquainted themselves with each other, as Levi plowed his fingers into Marsh’s hair and Marsh swallowed his husband’s whimpers, Marsh thought maybe this was his favorite kiss he and Levi had ever shared. Nothing hidden, souls and hearts bared, both of them on the same page, both of them relieved to be back together, exactly where they were meant to be.
